Volume I: Cormac McCarthy’s Appalachian Works covers The Orchard Keeper, Outer Dark, Child of God and Suttree with essays by Richard Marius on the Knoxville of McCarthy’s youth and seminal discussions of all the Appalachian novels by Edwin Arnold, Gary Ciuba, John Lang and Nell Sullivan, among others; the new edition includes additional articles by Robert Morgan on the stylistic influence of dialect and local tradition in The Gardener’s Son and the Appalachian novels, Mike Gibson on McCarthy’s boyhood friends and contemporaries who became the gallery of scoundrels in Suttree, and Caroline Morris on hubris in The Stonemason.
